With the boards cleared away, the nave was made ready for an afternoon and evening of entertainment and revelry.

Jude, who had a fair talent for playing a pipe, had arranged for two of his friends, professional minstrels with the London Waits, to come with shawm, sackbut and curtal to provide music for the dancing.

Seb wasn’t much of a one for step-dancing, having never learned because of his past difficulties when he had been so lame, though he thought at some future time, without an audience, he might try. No matter, he could most certainly sing and gave voice to some merry songs and carols, leaving the dancing to others.

Lord Richard was first among those to take the floor, performing a courtly measure with Dame Ellen, a common ring-dance with the bride, and a jig at the gallop, which involved exchanging partners as they swung around the nave. Breathless, everyone was keen to refresh themselves after so much exertion, making way for a troupe of jugglers, fire-eaters and sword-swallowers who dressed in strange exotic costumes and claimed to be Egyptians but, in fact, not one had been born farther afield than Stratford-atte-Bow. Their darkened skins were the result of judicious use of walnut juice and nought to do with the heat of distant lands. Even so, they were fine performers and brought the celebrations to a close. Apart from the final act, of course.
